CBR1000RR Crank Replacement Empty
PostSubject: CBR1000RR Crank Replacement   CBR1000RR Crank Replacement I_icon_minitimeThu Mar 24, 2011 7:53 pm

We had a 2008 Honda CBR1000RR come into the shop today, 3700 miles on it.

Honda extended the warranty on all of these, and it is a good thing they did - this one sounded horrific!

Honda requested a video of the VIN then the right hand side of the bike, recording the sound and showing the clutch action.

We brought the bike up to operating temp, held the front brake and lightly loaded the clutch in first - the noise would go away.

Sure sign of issues, a 9.9 hour warranty job possibility and the replacement of the crank and a few other things.

Any interest in seeing the teardown?

I'll see what I can do. Honda authorized the crank replacement yesterday, it is being shipping out.

We have to wait for it to arrive and to split the cases to order up the correct rod and main bearings.

9.9 hours it pays, going to be interesting to see what it really takes.

Crankshaft kit arrived Wednesday.

Honda was nice enough to charge us not only for the kit, but also for handling, sometimes warranty work can be so frustrating.....

Going to try and schedule this for next week, at the latest. Hopefully I mentioned that we have to pull the motor, yank the crank, then measure the bearings and order the correct ones - all while leaving the fricking bike apart in the shop....

Want a quick turnaround on this one, Honda is only paying 9.9 hours, seems like a lot of work in that amount of time!

I'm cornfused? If its warranty work why is Honda charging for the parts and shipping. Shouldn't it come from them free?

Why do the bearings have to be measured? Shouldn't the factory already know what they are and send them to you? Just doesn't add up to me.

Warranty is a PIA - You have to buy the parts up front, then you file for reimbursement. If you file too late or make a mistake in completing the required documentation, you can loose out on everything. It's not easy or simple.

Not sure on the bearings, just following the instructions on what we have to do.

Warranty, I've had horror stories in the past week about what a customer demands and what we actually get reimbursed for.

Honda is actually one of the best, and even at that, it's (warranty) not a profit center, by any means.

Ohmmmmmmmmmm.................................

Steve-

I've inquired about what is all in the kit. I know the Crank is in there, but is there anything else. No one seems to know or would like to tell me for that matter!

Yes - Bearings were ID'ed and placed on order today. Placing on order in service takes a day to make it through to procurement, and I spoke with them to assure the parts get ordered tomorrow morning.

Estimate 3 days for shipping, we'll be verifying the bearing size Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest.

All goes well, should have it all back together by the end of next week.

I've got some more pictures somewhere.....

Steve-

Dont know what happened to my last post but I understand that you guys are doing everything you can and im glad that you are not just throwing it togather. I would rather wait an extra week to ensure that it is done properly. Ill call my case manager at Honda and have her chill out!! Did you ever find anymore pics?

Thanks
Ben

The division that is on my back is different that the one you are dealing with.

I've got X amount of days to complete a warranty repair, and their clock is ticking.

I'll have to double check my date stamps, worst case, we may have to get "creative".

Couple pictures, I'm having trouble with the quality of my "new" camera.

I'm hoping to be able to follow up on the bearings tomorrow.

More to come - and THANK YOU BEN!!!!
